Helsinki 2026: Integrating Patient Safety into Informal Caregiving

On 14–15 April 2026, BetterCare (COST Action CA22152) meets in Helsinki to advance a key goal: bringing patient safety beyond hospital settings and into informal caregiving at home.

This meeting, funded by COST – European Cooperation in Science and Technology and supported by LAB University of Applied Sciences, connects countries and key stakeholders to agree on shared priorities:

✔️ Prevent caregiver errors at home
✔️ Strengthen safer care transitions
✔️ Build practical support for caregivers and care recipients

💡 As populations age and chronic conditions rise, home care is becoming more complex and intense. Without formal safety structures, risks often go unnoticed—affecting both care recipients and caregivers’ wellbeing.

Designed to deliver concrete outcomes:

  • A shared definition of patient safety in informal caregiving
  • A rapid mapping of national policies and initiatives
  • A strengthened international collaboration network to scale research and innovation

The programme also addresses key topics such as:
🔹 Safety risks in home care (medication errors, communication gaps, transitions)
🔹 The emotional impact on caregivers (the “double victim” concept)
🔹 The role of institutions in supporting safety beyond clinical settings
🔹 Practical solutions for safer and more resilient care systems
